2Greetings Doc,
I have alopecia totalis–my internist says I look like Nefertiti–that was a compliment I guess. I don’t take medication for mental illness, so this information is interesting and worthy to forward to my support group. You just keep giving out the great knowledge Doc!

3I don’t know if I’m losing my hair because of the generic Lamotrigene, the testosterone replacement therapy, aging or stress.
Oh well, I don’t really care. Once it really starts to go my wife won’t protest when I want to shave my head.
I like your hair though. If I could have hair like that I would care that I’m losing it.

5Hi again DrFindMind. I tried to find Centrum silver for the zinc and selenium here in New Zealand and the pharmacist said it isn’t available here. She said if I can find out what the daily dose of zinc and selenium required for the regrowth of hair she will try to find an alternative for me. Are you able to find out the strengths of selenium and zinc for me from the centrum silver bottle and what dose I would need? Thank you very much again.

8Well if it causes Alopecia, then it may confirm my theory that my generic Metoprolol ER does nothing for my blood pressure. When I switched back to Topral XL pressure was fine.
Thanks Mark.

9FOLLI-CLEANSE shampoo by Healthy Hair Plus is good for this purpose as it helps circulate zinc to the hair follicle. So is taking he shou wu root. I have been taking vitamin/mineral/herb suppliments for over 20 years so no hair loss for me even on depakote. I am currently treating my dads lexapro induced alopecia with a special formulation of Chinese herbs that I put together for him.

11I used to have really thick hair until I had to start takinf Epilim (sodium valproate), then it came out by the handful. The amount of hair that came out would be the same and then I went on Seroquel aswell and the same story, heaps of hair falling out. My hairdresser was shocked and asked what had happened and I burst into tears. Thanks for the info on centrum silver, I hope I can get it here in New Zealand and it isn’t too late to work for me. Hopefully the new Zeldox won’t make more fall out.

12Yes caughtintheUndert0w is right, thanks for “giving a shit” about your patients. I think I recently my hair got noticably thinner over the course of a few days out of nowhere and my tinnitus got worse and they didn’t even consider maybe the meds caused it. Well I’m getting a physical done in a few days and if they find nothing I guess I’ll try Centrum Silver like you recommended because I really liked my hair.

18Yes, all SSRI’s caused significant hair loss with me. Also Effexor, which was the worst. The most frustrating part was various dr’s saying it was probably just sress. I’ve had all hormone levels checked, and thyroid and all were within normal limits. I stopped Celexa last August and my hair regrowth is at about 85%. I figure it should be all in by December. Trust your instincts, but keep taking meds if the risks of stopping them will significantly impair your life. P.S. I like ur outfit DR.

19as an MD you are the minority…most pdocs will look up the drug and look at the list of documented side effects from the trials and say “It’s not listed here” end discussion…we are mental, must be that, I’ll ill, not fucking stupid..sorry for giving your colleagues a bad rap but they need to look past what the drug reps and free trips the drug companies are giving/offering them…again thanks for “giving a shit” about your patients they are VERY lucky to have you.

20Absolutely. Thank you for addressing this issue. Wellbutrin and Lamictal and Strattera all cause hair loss, but try to convince your psychiatrist of that! He looks in the book and says “There’s no evidence of that.” I take prenatal vitamins to try to reverse the loss of my once thick horse-like hair.

21Could this be true too, for a bipolar teen male on buproprion and depakote?
